With just $52,986 in career live earnings and only one WSOP cash - for less than the $10k buy-in to the Main Event - Las Vegas resident Qui Nguyen doesn't immediately stand out as a threat at the 2016 WSOP Main Event final table.
Given that those cashes date back to 2003, though, he might have a bit more up his sleeve than expected.
Coming into Day 7 of the Main Event 25 of 27 in the chip counts, most expected Nguyen to drop out of the race to $8m quickly but instead he finds himself right near the top of the pack heading into the November Nine.
Given that it's his first-ever WSOP Main Event cash it's equally surprising to see him soar above a batch of bigger and more respected names to make the final group.
He didn't come into the November Nine sputtering, either, as he knocked out three players in rapid succession in Level 34 including legend Tom Marchese and Australian superstar James Obst.
Nguyen's flush-over-flush elimination of Marchese was huge for his chip stack and pushed him up over 40m. Busting Obst (tens over fives) and Mike Shin shortly after jumped him up even further.
Nguyen is a regular in the cash games at Bellagio and Aria in Las Vegas, where he's earned the nickname "Tommy Gun," according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. His regular stakes are from $1-$3 to $10-$20.
His biggest leak, he says? The baccarat tables. Nguyen won his Main Event entry on his third satellite try - the first for $565 and the second two for $1,100
He'll start the final table with 67,925,000 - over 130 big blinds.
