Texas Dolly Rides into Town

The World Series of Poker feels incomplete without the “Godfather of Poker” but that was rectified on Wednesday.

Doyle Brunson, as promised, rolled into the Amazon Room and took a seat in the $5,000 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo 8-Or-Better Championship.

This year Brunson has stated several times that he won’t be playing many tournaments, as he can’t handle the long hours of the WSOP.

The legendary Brunson, who holds 10 WSOP bracelets, second only to Phil Hellmuth’s 11, won his last bracelet at the 2005 WSOP in the $5,000 Short-Handed No-Limit Hold’em.

Since then Brunson has made a three WSOP final tables but has been unable to close one out.

The 78-year-old Brunson appeared chipper as ever on Wednesday and was telling Allen Kessler about the time he raced Amarillo Slim on a scooter in the halls of the Rio a few years ago.

Slim, a close friend of Brunson and one of the first WSOP Main Event champions, passed away in April.

The sad reality is there will eventually come a time when Brunson is no longer at the World Series of Poker but fortunately for poker fans everywhere we can say that day is not today.
